Can I visit your club before joining (to see what it’s like)?

You certainly can! In fact we recommend it. Email to arrange a visit or just drop in on any scheduled workshop session (see our Workshop Hours). When you arrive, please introduce yourself to one of our members who will provide you with a tour and answer any questions.

Can children join your club?

Children (8 to 17 years) join FREE as part of a parent’s membership and are very welcome at our club.
Children must attend with a parent, grandparent, or guardian. Our club is “family friendly”, and children are encouraged to participate in a variety of lapidary and allied activities with their family, and, as they gain experience, independently. If you’re interested in pursuing lapidary as a family hobby, please come and have a chat with us.

I’d like to make a donation to your club.

If you have rocks, minerals, gems, or publications that you would like to donate to our club, please email us to discuss arrangements. We have a large permanent mineral showcase display, which we are always happy to add to.

Can your club members cut a gemstone for me?

We do not cut gemstones for the general public. In truth it often takes more work to cut a gemstone than people feel comfortable paying for and our club is an incorporated association for hobbyists to develop and pursue their craft.  Of course if you join as a member, we can teach you and work with you to help you cut your own gemstones. If you’d like to commission a professional to cut a gemstone for you, please view our Buy Lapidary Supplies Page.

I would like to get a gemstone identified.

We are hobbyists, not experts, but we will endeavour to help you. We often have skilled and experienced gem dealers at our annual exhibition and identification services are often provided at other club shows  (see our Calendar on the Home page for further details). Take your specimen to one of these exhibitions and ask for help with identification.

I am an interstate or international rockhound and would like to see your club.

We’d also love to see you! Please email to arrange a visit during workshop hours.

I like a fossicking story on your website. Can I get the location?

Unfortunately we do not generally share this information due to past experience of over-fossicking and damage to the fossicking areas and in some case withdrawal of access to legitimate fossickers. All fossickers are required by law to have a Miner’s Right and we expect them to abide by a code of conduct developed by the Victorian Gem Clubs Association (VGCA). As a Club member, you will have access to planned/coordinated field-trips.

Can you recommend a lapidary supplier/rock shop to me?

We have a list of suppliers on our Buy Lapidary Supplies Page and also on our Classifieds Page. We can also recommend dealers with whom we have had experience.

I would like to sell some gemstones/rocks/lapidary equipment.

The Essendon Gem & Lapidary Club assists lapidary enthusiasts to pursue their hobby and is a not-for-profit club. The club rarely purchases gemstone material. We recommend that people wanting to sell specimens try our Classifieds Page. We can however often find buyers for pre-loved lapidary equipment among our membership.

Where do I find out more about Pointer magazine?
